Emergency exit window (Egress window)
Fire escape window large enough for a person to climb out of. In U.S. building codes, each bedroom must be provided with an exit window or door. The exact width, area, and height from the floor are specified in the building codes.
Energy Star
A program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy that establishes minimum performance standards for windows and doors to be recognized as energy efficient. Four different sets of standards for U-value and solar heat gain have been established for four different climate zones in the U.S. See the Association Directory for more information on the Energy Star Windows program.
ElectroStatic Paint (E.S.P)
Painting process used to paint aluminum extrusions - the metal is charged negatively and the paint positively to enable total coverage of the surface.
Extension jamb
(Jamb lining) - (Jamb extender) - A board used to increase the depth of the jambs of a window or door frame to fit a wall of any given thickness.
Extrusion
A form produced by forcing material through a die. Most window and door frames are clad with extruded vinyl or aluminum.
